Улю́блена спра́ва моє́ї бабу́сі – це її́ горо́д. Вона́ цим займа́ється все своє́ життя́. Íноді ска́ржиться, що горо́д їй набри́д. Але́ тíльки до пе́рших плодíв. По́тім ска́рги випаро́вуються та залиша́ється тíльки задово́лення.

My grandma’s favorite thing is her garden. She takes care of it all her life. Sometimes she complains that the garden is boring for her. But this is only until the first harvest. Then her complains disappear and only the satisfaction remains.

Я не ду́же люблю́ ці бе́сіди. Бе́сіди про те, як кома́ха ́ха ї́сть помідо́ри, або́ як га́рно росте́ гарбу́з в цьо́му ро́ці, або́ як пога́но, що нема́є дощу́ вже бага́то днів по́спіль. Але́ я дуже́ люболю́ свою́ бабусю́, тому́ му́шу слу́хати.

I don’t like these conversations very much. The conversations about which insect is eating the tomatoes, or how well the pumpkin is growing this year, or how bad it is that it hasn’t rained for many days in a row. But I love my grandma very much, so I have to listen.

Я завжди́ диву́юсь та не зо́всім розумíю звíдки бабу́ся бере́ си́ли. Íноді вона́ прихо́дить з робо́ти ду́же вто́млена. Але́ як тíльки зайде́ на свíй горо́д – вто́му як руко́ю зняло́. Вона́ мо́же не вихо́дити звíдти до те́мної но́чі! Мабу́ть земля́ надає́ їй сили́.

I always wonder and don’t really understand where my grandma takes her strength from. Sometimes she comes from work very tired. But as soon as she walks into her garden it all disappears. Sometimes she#s capable to not leave from there until late at night! Perhaps the earth gives her strength.

Звича́йно я їй допомага́ю. Але́ я помічни́к таки́й собí. Бабу́ся постíйно й сміє́ться з ме́не й сва́рить одноча́сно. Оди́н день я не так полива́ю квíти, дру́гий день я наступа́ю на молоду́ мо́ркву, тре́тій день – я́блука не так збира́ю й таке́ íнше в цьо́му ду́сі…

Of course, I help her. But I am not much of a helper. My grandma always laughs at me and tells me off at the same time. One day I water the flowers in the wrong way, another day I step on baby carrots, the next day I collect the apples in the wrong way and more of the same stuff.

А одно́го ра́зу, коли́ менí було́ 5 ро́ків, я ду́же захотíла зроби́ти приє́мно мої́й бабу́сі. Я нарвала́ мале́ньких квіточо́к на горо́ді та подарува́ла їх. За це мене́ посвари́ли. Але́ ж я не зна́ла, що то були́ квíти полуни́ці! Роби́ пíсля цьо́го приє́мне…

And once, when I was 5 years old, I very much wanted to please my grandma. I picked small flowers in the garden and gave them (to her) as a gift. I was told off for that. But I didn’t know that they were the strawberry flowers! Go and please someone after something like that…

Але́ як же приє́мно по́тім, взи́мку, коли́ за вікно́м морозе́ць та снíгу по колíно, сидíти вдо́ма та пи́ти гаря́чий чай з бабу́синим полуни́чним варе́нням з вла́сного горо́ду! Як тíльки зажму́рюєш очі від задово́лення, одра́зу уявля́єш лíтній день, бабу́сині кло́поти в горо́ді та бабу́син сміх від того який я “помічни́к”.

But how nice it is then in winter, when outside it’s freezing cold and there’s knee-deep snow, to stay at home and drink hot tea with my grandma’s strawberry jam from our own garden! As soon as you close your eyes from pleasure, you imagine right away a summer day, my grandmother’s fuss in the garden and her laughter about what a “helper” I am.
