In this lesson we will meet and will try to get more familiar with instrumental case through the dialogues, examples and grammar rules.
Introduction to the instrumental case
When is the instrumental case used?
Generally, we use the instrumental case…
- to express the “instrument” used to perform an action:
- with the preposition “з” (with):
- to tell the parts of the day:

| Кава з молоком | Coffee with milk |
| ранок / вранці | morning / in the morning |
| день / вдень | day or afternoon / in the afternoon |

З ким ти розмовляєш?
Who are you talking to?
Я розмовляю з другом. Ввечері я йду в кіно з моїми друзями, а потім на дискотеку.
I’m talking with a friend. In the evening I’m going to the cinema with my friends and afterwards to the disco.
Але завтра вранці ти працюєш!
But tomorrow morning you work!
Ні, в мене вихідний та я буду займатися спортом.
No, I have the day off and I’m going to do sports.
Але з ким? я працюю завтра…
But with whom? I work tomorrow…
З моєю собакою. До речі, де моя собака? Вона за диваном?
With my dog. By the way, where’s my dog? Is she behind the sofa?
Ні, дивись. Вона спить під столом.
No, look. She’s sleeping under the table.
Dialogue 3
Ким ти хочеш бути коли виростеш?
Who do you want to be when you grow up?
Не знаю…Всі мої друзі хочуть стати астронавтами. Я не згоден з ними. Не кожен може бути астронавтом.
I don’t know… All my friends want to become astronauts. I don’t agree with them. Not everyone can be an astronaut.
Звичайно, хто буде лікарем, вчителем та інженером?
Of course, Who will be doctors, teachers and engineers?
Саме так. Та я хочу стати художником. Я дуже люблю малювати. Я малюю днями і ночами.
That’s it. And I want to become a painter. I love drawing a lot. I draw day and night (days and nights).
А що ти малюєш?
And what do you draw?
Весною я люблю малювати вулиці та дома. А зимою я малюю сніг.
In spring I love drawing streets and houses. And in winter I draw snow.
Чим ти малюєш?
What do you draw with?
Раніше я малював олівцями, а зараз я віддаю перевагу малюванню фарбами. Я дуже задоволений моїми малюнками.
Before I drew with pencils, and now I prefer painting with paints. I’m very pleased with my pictures.

Masculine: -ом
- Це мій студент (Nom.). This is my student.
- Я задоволений студентом (Instr.). I am pleased with my student.

- Язадоволений студентамм (Instr.). I am pleased with my students.
Feminine: -ою
- Це моя книга (Nom.). This is my book.
- Я задоволений моєю книгою (Instr.). I am pleased with my book.
Feminine: -ами
- Це мої книги (Nom.). These are my books.
- Я задоволений моїми книгами (Instr.). I am pleased with my books.
Neuter: -ом, -ем
- Це моє вікно (Nom.). This is my window.
- Я задоволений моїм вікном (Instr.). I am pleased with my window.
Neuter: -ами, – ями
- Це мої вікна (Nom.) These are my windows.
- Я задоволений моїми вікнами (Instr.). I give a present to my windows.
