Ukrainian reflexive verbs

When we use a reflexive verb in a sentence, the subject and the object are the same. In English, we usually convey this idea by adding “myself”, “yourself”, etc. (I wash myself, he looks at himself,…).

In Ukrainian we add this particle: -ся.

Now we will see an example in English and Ukrainian with the same verbs: ми́ти (to wash) and ми́тися (to wash oneself):

To wash
Ми́ти
I wash the dishes Я ми́ю по́суд
You wash the dishes ти ми́єш по́суд
He washes the dishes він/вона́/воно́ ми́є по́суд
We wash the dishes ми ми́ємо по́суд
You wash the dishes ви ми́єте по́суд
They wash the dishes вони́ ми́ють по́суд
To wash oneself
Ми́тися
I wash myself я ми́юся
You wash yourself ти ми́єшся
He washes himself він/вона́/воно́ ми́ється
We wash ourselves ми ми́ємося
You wash yourselves ви ми́єтеся
They wash themselves вони ми́ються
Past: washed the dishes Він мив по́суд
Вона́ ми́ла по́суд
Воно́ ми́ло по́суд
Ми ми́ли по́суд
Past: washed oneself Він ми́вся
Вона́ ми́лася
Воно́ ми́лося
Ми ми́лися

ATTENTION!
The third person in reflexive verbs.

Please pay attention to the third person form for reflexive verbs. Not only “-ся” is added but also but also “-ть” before “-ся” = > “-ться”.

The verb “to go”: йти

In Ukrainian there are many verbs to express movement. Of course, “йти” is the most important one.

Present
Past
Я йду Я йшов (masc.) / Я йшла (fem.)
Ти йдеш Ти йшов (masc.) / Ти йшла (fem.)
Він / вона́ / воно́ йде Він йшов /Вона́ йшла/ Воно́ йшло́
Ми йдемо́ Ми йшли
Ви йдете́ ви йшли
Вони́ йдуть вони́ йшли
